I'm a huge fan of magnolia leaf garland. Not only does it look beautiful for Christmas, but it's one of the few live elements that dries absolutely beautifully and lasts for months. If you have a magnolia tree on your property (or your friend's property) go for it!

The key to making your front porch shine is to add in multiple layers. See how there are several different sized Christmas trees? Although this front porch display likely took a lot of thought to construct, the layers make it look simply effortless and beautiful!

Ideas on how to decorate your porch for Christmas

Up until a couple years ago, I never decorated my front porch for Christmas. It seemed too intimidating and I honestly didn't know where to start. After reading and doing a little experimenting on my own I finally feel confident! Here's some ideas that helped me get started:

Make a Christmas planter for your front porch

Have you ever seen those Christmas planters and thought they looked like a lot of work to pull off? Guess what, you can totally pull it off and it's not ever that difficult (but don't worry, you can still tell people it was hard!) Here's how to easily pull off the look:

Start by using a planter and adding potting soil. Alternatively, if mums graced your fall front porch scene, clip them off down to the potting soil and use in your Christmas planter.

Start by adding some height to the middle of your planter. You can use birch logs, a lantern or I've even seen planters with twigs in the middle (as long as they're about the same height).

Next, you want to use holiday greenery like pine, cedar and spruce to fill the rest of the planter in. If you don't have some of this in your yard, save some clippings from your tree or visit a local nursery. It's even cost effective to buy a smaller tree to dismantle for wreaths and projects like this, too.

Top with some berries, or sprinkle in some pinecones.

Use a tomato vine planter

My mom introduced me to this concept years ago and it's completely genius. Perfect for the front porch, these tomato vine planter Christmas trees are a cinch to make. All you need are some wire tomato vine planters like the ones you see below.

Start by turning the planter upside down where the base is larger on the bottom. Use wire cutters to clip off the "feet" of the planter if you're putting right on your porch, or keep them to stick in the ground.

Next, you'll take the three points and clamp them together to form a point (like the top of your Christmas tree). You can cut of excess with wire cutters.

Start from the top and wrap garland around the planter until you get to the bottom. To add lights, start at the top with the female end until you've reached the bottom. You might need two or three strands, depending on how tall your tree is. Add a bow at the top to finish it off!

One of these on each side of your front door looks gorgeous from the street. I've also plopped my tomato vine Christmas trees on top of round planters to elevate them a little more, too. I really like that look.

Go faux then add the real stuff

Pick up faux inexpensive garland or wreaths and then make them come alive by adding in the real stuff. Here's where it's fun to go foraging around in your yard–looking for pine or holly bushes to add in. You can even get clippings from trees from places like nursery's and Lowes or Home Depot to add in, too.

You'll need some green floral wire to make this work, and you'll just add in the branches and wrap them tight with the wire. You can even add in some faux berries to complete the look. Don't forget to use this method when you're decorating your Christmas mantel, too!
